Response from Woman Featured in ‘The Great Equalizer’
October 27th, 2009
Hi Dr. Piazza,
It was my husband who sent you the story you used in your Monday blog.
That was me. Yes I was scared to death.
I got up there in the line of 40 people and the tears started running down my face uncontrollably. I don’t like violence and I was afraid there would be an accident with a gun in the house. Your instructors came over to me and were so sweet to me. They were understanding and calmed me down. They said I didn’t have to do anything I didn’t want to.
I decided I had to overcome this fear. The way the economy is, there is going to be a lot of people desperate for food and money and more and more burglaries. I do not want to be one of those woman left for dead when someone breaks into my house. I am often left alone at home with my 3 year old grandson. I have to protect him.
I now feel comfortable that I can defend myself from an intruder.
Thank you to all of your instructors and all of their patience with me.
Gratefully yours,
Laurie W.
