Front Sight Mail Bag: Good Article on Cross Dominance
August 7th, 2010
Dr. Piazza;
Gun Training Report #21: Good article on cross-dominance! I found it especially interesting because I am cross-dominant (sort of – I’ll explain). I do most everything with my right hand, however I shoot, throw a Frisbee, and eat (sometimes) left-handed.
When my father first taught me to shoot using our Ithaca lever-action 22 rifle (which, of course, I still have!), I held the rifle left-handed. This just seemed more comfortable for me, & it was easier for me to close my right eye than my left. It was not until years later, when I joined the Air Force, that I took the eye dominance test your report talks about, only to discover what my body had known all along; that it was natural for me to shoot left-handed because I was left-eye dominant! I’m just glad that it’s easier to find left-handed holsters & other accessories than it was 30 years ago!
As a side note, I endured my own unique form of “leftie prejudice” growing up; whenever I would eat a steak, my mom would shake her head & roll her eyes when I left the fork in my right hand & picked up the knife with my left. I thought that it was a silly waste of motion to switch the fork to my left hand & cut with my right, when my fork is already at home in my right hand!
Again, good article! I have found all your reports so far to be interesting & informative. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for your time.
Bill T.
