Front Sight Mail Bag: Wax bullets
October 2nd, 2006
An Interesting Letter:
Dr. Piazza,
I’ll share one of the neatest tricks I learned for cheap safe plinking indoors. assuming you reload or know someone who does.
If you take non-reloadable shells (CCI’s aluminum ones for example) and deprime them you can make cheap indoor plinkers.
Warm a block of Parafin (Hard wax) push the shells into them making a “wax wad cutter” and put a primer in the shell. You can shoot these indoors safely.
Having been home-bound several times I learned to appriciate this. I still like your dry practicing methods but the thrill of hearing the splat on a target is hard to beat.
Will
Very interesting, Will.
We recommend that any person who occasionally uses anything in their firearm aside from live ammunition take specific precautions to keep from hearing a “click” when they want a “bang” — or a “bang” when they want a “click”. We lay out the proper method for at-home shooting practice in our Dry Practice Manual, including safe practice techniques, how to properly manage different ammunition types (live and dummy), and how to prepare for any practice session. We recommend every person practicing at home — in any method — read over the manual to get a good idea of the basics of safe practice and gun handling.
